Dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires, which damage
structures, destroy homes and injure or kill people.
When you burn wood or fire logs (Duraflame) the smoke that
travels up the chimney contains small particles of tar and
unburned wood. This collects and builds up on the chimney's
walls. This buildup is still very flammable and can catch on fire.
When this buildup catches on fire the temperatures inside the
chimney are too hot for the chimney to handle. The fire can
rupture and crack the inner liner of the chimney allowing flames
to get into any area that is touching the chimney. The flames
coming out the top of the chimney can catch the roof or
surrounding trees on fire.
The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends that
open masonry fireplaces should be cleaned at 1/4" of sooty
buildup, and sooner if there is any glaze present in the system.
Factory built fireplaces should be cleaned when any appreciable
build up occurs. This is considered to be enough fuel buildup to
cause a chimney fire capable of damaging the chimney or
spreading to the home.

Consumer Product Safety
Commission (CPSC) indicate that,
in 1997, there were 16,800
residential fires in the United States
originating in clothes dryers. These
fires resulted in personal injuries,
deaths and property damage. The
CPSC also reports that in 1996, approximately 400 people were non-fatally poisoned by carbon monoxide as a result of a gas clothes dryer.
Old or new, maintaining your dryer system is a must. Over the course of a year the average dryer processes 477 loads of laundry or about 9 loads a week. This is no big deal for the dryer itself, the machine is designed to handle this, but your vent is another story.
Is your dryer system a problem?
